John Rangel was born into a musical family and raised in Manhattan. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 90's. Rangel had his own recording studio in Pacific Palisades and produced recordings for a wide range of media projects. During that time, he also studied Film Scoring with Charles Bernstein and Mark Isham.
John Rangel is a multifaceted musician, composer, and producer. He has traveled around the world performing at venues such as The North Sea Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott's, the London Philharmonic, The Inntone Jazz Festival in Austria, Carnegie Hall in NY, Royce Hall in LA, The Gene Harris Jazz Festival in Idaho, The Playboy Jazz Festival, The LA County Museum of Art, MOCA, Central Avenue Jazz Festival, The Jazz Café in London, The Lensic in Santa Fe, The Outpost Performance Space, and various venues in Japan, the UK, and South Africa.
While living in LA, John immersed himself in the rich vibrant culture of Leimert Park, the center of African-American Arts in LA... brimming with poets, artists, and musicians. This community was a major influence on John's musical direction and worldview. John is unique because of his tremendous range of musical experience; Jazz, Classical, Film & Television Music, Pop, Hi-Life, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso to name just a few.
John Rangel's versatility as a jazz pianist is most evident in his work with the following artists; Nat Adderly, Marcus Printup, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Shew, Sam Rivers, Pharaoh Saunders, Sonny Fortune, Zane Musa, Eric Person, Justin Ray, Doug Lawrence, Ernie Watts, Sam Most, Phil Ranelin, Scott Whitfield, George Bohannon, Al McKibbon, James Leary, Dr. Art Davis, Nedra Wheeler, Tony Dumas, Danton Boller, Dwight Trible, Carmen Bradford, James Torme (son of Mel), Tawanda Suessbrich-Joaquim, Yana Bibb, Jasmin Williams, Blay Amboley and His Afrikan Jazz Band, Tierney Sutton, Eddie Daniels, Willie Jones III, Ndugu Chancellor, Lorca Hart, Greg Abate, Ralph Penland, Smitty Smith, Joe La Barbera, Derf Reklaw, and Billy Higgins.
John has written over 400 compositions for Jazz Quartet, Quintet, Big Band, String Quartet, Chamber Orchestra, and Solo Piano works. He is now based in Santa Fe, NM where has a recording studio and media production company. Jindojazz Productions specializes in content-driven media and has a signature division known as "Musician Made Films." As a composer, John has received numerous commissions and as a producer, he has won 17 New Mexico Music Awards.
